Two options are available for people who have decided to have their remaining natural teeth extracted:

Immediate Dentures
Post-Immediate Dentures

Immediate Dentures
An immediate denture is a complete denture or partial denture inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of natural teeth.

Advantages: There are several advantages of an immediate denture. The most important factor is that you will never need to appear in public without teeth. It is also easier to duplicate the shape, color and arrangement of your natural teeth while some are still present in your mouth. When an immediate denture is inserted at the time of extraction, it will act as a Band-Aid to protect the tissues and reduce bleeding. An immediate denture will allow you to establish your speech patterns early. You will not have to learn to speak without a denture in place and then later relearn to speak with a new denture. An immediate denture will also allow you to chew better than without any teeth and minimize facial distortion that may occur when teeth are removed.

Disadavantages:The biggest drawback of Immediate Dentures is the inability of the Denturist to construct your dentures using the same procedures normally used. This means that you will not have an opportunity to view the appearance of the dentures before being inserted in your mouth. You will not be able to 'try-in' your new denture to see if you like the look.
The Denturist will do his best to make sure the relationship of your jaw is as close to your natural position as possible, and the new teeth are the right size, shape and color. But remember some guesswork is involved in the fit of the immediate denture as the amount of bone lost during extractions can vary from person to person.

Post-Immediate Dentures
Post-Immediate Dentures are constructed after your teeth are extracted and your gums feel comfortable enough to take impressions. This time period can be as early as one week and take no more than two weeks to complete.

Post-Immediate dentures allow the Denturist to fabricate your new dentures with the same measurements and techniques normally used in denture construction and design.

The biggest advantage of Post-Immediate dentures is the ability to try your new dentures in your mouth before completion. The degree of satisfaction with this method is increased twofold, especially if you are looking for a functional and esthetically pleasing change.

The decision you make in regards to Immediate or Post-Immediate Dentures will be determined by your unique situation with the help of the Denturist. It is important to note that the longer you wait before the first impressions are taken the better the outcome of your new dentures.
